NCKU

National Cheng Kung University welcomes thinkers, makers and optimists.

NCKU is active in all areas critical to the quality and sustainability of life. Through the major contributions that our research, students and partnerships make to societies worldwide, we aspire to be the pride of Taiwan and an inspiration to Tainan.

Research

Every discovery is just the start

Researchers have a critical role to play in solving the challenges facing humanity at all levels. At NCKU we place great emphasis on the application of our discoveries to ensure the benefit to communities is as far-reaching as possible. Based on our research strengths and track-record, we take responsibility for creating effective industry ecosystems and assisting governments in the development and implementation of policies that will build a more sustainable, equitable future.

01 — Environment

We are actively involved in sustainability transitions and social innovation. We provide the cross-disciplinary education, research and leadership required to make radical transformation toward sustainable societies. With new insights about the changing environment, we are putting new materials and new systematic approaches into action, creating socially responsible solutions to complex environmental challenges around the world.

02 — Energy

Across NCKU, we have 32 research groups that focus on a wide variety of energy technology, including most importantly solar cells, energy strategies, bio energy, wind power, LED lighting, carbon capture and storage, and hydrogen systems. These groups represent eight colleges and thirty departments at NCKU, working alongside thirty off-campus research institutes and spin-off companies.

03 — Healthcare

Societies worldwide face challenges related to ageing populations and the increasing prevalence of health problems. At NCKU we have a well-established biomedical and healthcare research ecosystem enabling us and our partners to lead the biotech industry in discovering and demonstrating sustainable solutions to these challenges.

04 — Space

NCKU integrates aerospace, aviation, satellite technology and space science to explore space and satellite applications for future intelligent living environments. In collaboration with the US’s top atmospheric research agency and used by researchers around the world we have built a next-generation space weather monitoring and forecasting system to study interference and impacts on satellite navigation and satellite-based communications.

05 — Quantum

We are now entering the era of the so-called second quantum revolution, where many intriguing quantum properties, such as superposition, entanglement and nonlocality, can be utilized to develop new technologies. Implementation of these quantum technologies combines a wide range of research, from quantum theory and algorithms to all aspects of quantum engineering in materials, devices, architectures and so on. Over the last decade, NCKU has invested in this area, integrating international scientists and engineers from different disciplines in a new research centre: Quantum Frontiers of Research & Technology (QFort).
